Geography and population
The Region of Dobrich is situated in north-eastern part of Bulgaria. The region covers a territory of 4700 sq.km and has a population of 218000 people. To the East, Dobrich region borders with Black Sea Cost.
Its major city is Dobrich - the eighth most populated town in Bulgaria. It is 50 km far from Varna. The town is 230m above sea level.
In 1949, Dobrich was named Tolbukhin in honor of the Soviet General Fedor Tolbukhin, whose 3rd Ukrainian Front was responsible for liberating the region from Nazi rule. The names of both the city and the province reverted to Dobrich in 1990. In the centre of the city is "the old city", a small district of reconstructed renaissance buildings. The city is an agricultural centre for all of northern Bulgaria. Dobrich is a major cultural center; it has Medical Institute, a symphony orchestra, theatre, many high and technical schools.
